Day Fifty One and Two: Mekong River Boat

Day Fifty One and Fifty Two March 13th and 14th, 2009
Mekong River
The next two days were spent traveling up the Mekong River. I believe that it is the twelfth longest river in the world. The journey was very beautiful and remote. We passed very small villages along the way, all the homes constructed in wood and other natural materials. Those that live along the river depend on it for their livelihood as either fishermen, farmers or both. I had failed to purchase batteries before we left civilization for the two days and was thus unable to take any pictures except for this one of the boat that we took for the journey up the river. The boats, very common in this area, are very long and narrow. The boats captain sits near the front of the boat, wheel in hand. The center portion of the boat is used for either passengers or cargo. Finally, the rear of the boat houses the engine, the toilet, the kitchen and the sleeping quarters for the boatman and his family.

The day on the boat was spent watching the passing trees and rocks, chatting with the others on the boat and eating the huge spread that the captains wife prepared.
