Hoi An to HueLeaving early in the morning we made a short journey by bus to the once imperial capital of Vietnam, Hue. The city was dirty and a bit uninspiring. The main attraction in the area is the places and city that was built here by the Chinese around 1500. We hired a guide for the afternoon to take us around by motorbike for the afternoon. The old city is surrounded by both a wall and a moat. Within the moat there are what seems to be hundreds of colorful carp. If you wave your hands over the groups of fish they all gather and gasp for the surface in hopes that you will drop down a few bits of food. The sight of one hundred carp mouths wide open is horrible. I am sure that some horror movie has already incorporated this sight into a death scene of a movie.

We also headed out of town to a location on where the Americans had established a few bunkers during the war. As we approached we were greeted by the silent looks of a couple groups of Vietnamese sitting atop the bunkers quietly chatting and passing around small glasses of vodka. It seems as though they were lamenting the tragedies that had happened here without really realizing it. The views from this sight were extremely beautiful. The bunkers overlooked a calm river with trees having bright green leaves on either side. It is hard to accept that this place was once the site of bloody battles and many deaths.
